## Role of central authorities

Central authorities and other competent bodies cooperate in intercountry adoption. In Lithuania, the central-authority functions are performed by the State Child Rights Protection and Adoption Service.

## Best interests of the child

The process focuses on the child’s interests, adoptability and suitability of the prospective family. Legal assistance cannot replace the institutional assessment but can help explain the procedure and documentary requirements.

## Documents and foreign requirements

Civil-status, residence, health, income, criminal-record and other documents may need to be obtained in several countries, translated, authenticated and transmitted through the required channels.

## Court and post-decision steps

Depending on the case, court proceedings, recognition of foreign documents, conformity certificates and post-adoption reporting obligations may be relevant.

## Before seeking advice

Identify the states and competent authorities involved, required approvals and assessments, and recognition of the outcome. Legal advice does not replace central authorities or mandatory safeguards for the child. Initially, provide only general information about the countries and procedural stage. Transfer the child’s documents and sensitive information only through an agreed secure channel.
