Intercountry adoption: why coordination of authorities and documents matters

Intercountry adoption is not merely a private family arrangement; competent authorities participate and international and domestic procedures apply.

Role of central authorities

Central authorities and other competent bodies cooperate in intercountry adoption. In Lithuania, the central-authority functions are performed by the State Child Rights Protection and Adoption Service.

Best interests of the child

The process focuses on the child’s interests, adoptability and suitability of the prospective family. Legal assistance cannot replace the institutional assessment but can help explain the procedure and documentary requirements.

Documents and foreign requirements

Civil-status, residence, health, income, criminal-record and other documents may need to be obtained in several countries, translated, authenticated and transmitted through the required channels.

Court and post-decision steps

Depending on the case, court proceedings, recognition of foreign documents, conformity certificates and post-adoption reporting obligations may be relevant.
